| An all day wait at this crowded HIV/AIDS clinic is normal. |
Access to good nutrition and health care is severely limited for those in the grip
of poverty. Information about the communication of the HIV/AIDS virus as well as basic preventative health care practices
is desperately needed. Estimates based on 2005 data report fewer than 25% of young men and 20% of young women in some
of the sub-Saharan African nations can correctly identify the way HIV/AIDS is spread.

The Daniel Orjiako Foundation provides public education about health care and nutrition
through its Compassionate Health Care Program. Lectures to community groups and radio and television programs focus
on reducing the rate of transmission of HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases, reducing the social stigma and improving
support for HIV/AIDS infected persons, and providing information on the services, counseling and treatment available
to infected persons. In addition, basic good nutrition and health practices are taught as the most poor are often from
rural areas with conditions that enable the quick spread of bacterial and viral diseases.

The Foundation's Health Care Oversight Committee works with local doctors and
nurses to develop and present about five to seven community meetings a year. In addition, radio and television
programs have been used to reach a wider audience. Presentations are typically help at a community marketplace or public
or church building. The presentations have been well received. Attendees at one meeting were so anxious
to have others hear the information that they pleaded the presentors to come back again after they had spread the news to
the community about the importance of sharing the knowledge.
