Believing that education is a tool that can help break the
chains of poverty, the Daniel Orjiako Foundation established the Education Scholarship Program to provide poor students the
opportunity to receive full scholarships for a university degree in engineering, medicine or social sciences.
The educational opportunities available to students from poor families
are so limited that the future holds few choices for them. The resources and education in public schools are
inadequate to prepare public school students to compete with private school students for seats at universities.

In response to this need, the Foundation holds Summer Sessions
that focus on math, the sciences, social studies, and English. The students attend the five week residential Summer
Sessions and several tutorial sessions throughout the school year for three years through their senior year. Thirty
students began in 2005, thirty more joined them in 2006, and in 2007 ninety students are attending the 2007 summer session.
The cost per year for these tutorials and summer session is $350 per student.

Reports from families, teachers,
and community members of the effects of the Summer Sessions have been positive from the start. The parents say
their children exhibit a greater sense of responsibility and focus on their studies. The students work with greater
confidence that their futures hold better opportunities.
The first class of 30
students who have attended the summer sessions for three years as of summer 2007 will complete their final year of high school
in spring of 2008. A comprehensive exam will determine which of the students will gain entrance to university.
Based on scores and teachers recommendations, the Daniel Orjiako Foundation will offer students full state university scholarships,
which is estimated to be around $1,500 per year.
